Twitter admits it has had its worst month since last October for downtime but promises it will do its best to stay up and running for World Cup games.
The micro-blog monster explained in a blog post that tweaking its system to fix problems created by a planned upgrade had uncovered deeper problems. It is working on long-term solutions but in the meantime will do its best to avoid outages during periods of heavy use - currently World Cup games.
The company said it would need to take down the site in the next few weeks for more maintenance, but said it would not do so during big games and would give advance warnings.
It said it was well aware that the footy would likely create traffic spikes for the site but had been unaware of the additional strain its own changes would put on systems.
Downtime monitoring service Pingdom reckons Twitter has been down for five hours and 22 minutes this month already - worse than at any time since August 2009, when the brainfart-sharing network was down for almost seven hours. ®

I don't understand why there is a spike in traffic during games. Well, I do, but I don't get the point. Every idiot in the world saying "Wow! Spain 0 - 1 Switzerland!!!" seems completely pointless. Any of your "followers" who gives a shit will already know.
