This is nice. A German man stranded on sea ice was saved by a woman sitting at her PC 500km away.

The man had gone for a stroll on the beach at St. Peter-Ording, on the North Sea, near Denmark, to watch the sunset, when he got disorientated, walked onto the ice, and could not find his way back.

Facing almost certain death [1], he flashed his camera in the hope of attracting attention. His saviour was watching a webcam set up on the beach to view the sunsets there, when she saw the camera flashes.

She rang the police, who rang emergency services, which sent out a patrol to rescue the man in temperatures plunging to minus 20c. Very cool.

You can check out St Peter Ording's many webcams here [2]. At time of writing, the weather looks pretty crap. So stay off the beach at sunset, OK?
