Greenock pensioners cuffed for Tesco 'sex romp'

Alleged indecency incident in bakery aisle

Two Greenock pensioners prompted the closure of a Tesco bakery aisle and police intervention after "stunned shoppers" clocked the pair indulging in a "sex romp", the Sun reports.

Fay Byrne, 62, and chum Peter Echlin, 78, were arrested for alleged public indecency after "horrified store bosses alerted cops". A Tesco source explained: "The man had on a coat and was holding it over the woman - staff thought they were shoplifters. Then when security men realised what was going on they closed an aisle in the shop and police were called in."

Widower Echlin, a father of two, claimed he'd been the victim of his friend's attentions. He said: "We were in shopping. She put her hand down my fly, I wasn't expecting it. She had her hand right in. I had to throw the slacks out because the zip was knackered. I've known her for years. Nothing like this has happened before."

He added: "I'm worried sick, I can't sleep. I've got coronary problems and I've got angina. This will put me over the edge."

Widow Byrne told the paper: "I've known him for a long time - I don't know if it'll go to court. There is nothing I want to say."

A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman confirmed the arrest of a "man aged 78 and a woman aged 62" last Friday afternoon for "public indecency", and said they "were later released on an undertaking to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court at a later date". ®
