Hackers free Snow Leopard from Jobsian cage

Apple Atomness restored

Snow Leopard users are once again free to run the Apple operating system on hardware with Atom processors, courtesy of hackers in Russia.

A custom version of OS 10.6.2 distributed here works around changes introduced earlier this month that prevented the latest OS X version from running on the Intel netbook processor. A Russian hacker named "Tea" produced it by modifying the kernel.

The update must be installed using the terminal utility. Snow Leopard users are advised to copy the software to a drive's root level and reboot. More about how to install the patch is available from this forum at Insanely Mac.

It's not known whether Apple intentionally removed Atom support in 10.6.2 or if the removal was the unintended consequence of some other change made to the OS. The release of 10.6.3 is sure to provide some clues about the company's long-term plans for the hackintosh community. ®
