Map reading courses all round at the Virgin Media press office, after an attempted spoiler campaign served only to disappoint and anger the denizens of "the oldest continuously inhabited town in Shropshire".
The firm yesterday received a public dressing-down from the Whitchurch Herald, which had in good faith reported several weeks ago that 50Mbit/s cable broadband was available in the town.
The report was based on a Virgin Media press release. Presumably having been involved in mix-ups in the past, the Herald sought - and was given - assurances that Virgin Media was indeed referring to the oldest continuously inhabited town in Shropshire rather than any of the more than a dozen synonymous burgs dotted around the country.
Only it wasn't, as it was forced to admit when excited Whitchurchers tried to order the super-duper new service, to be informed they couldn't have it.
"We have to apologise to those in Whitchurch who thought they could get this service. It was an error on our part," said a spokeswoman.
Although the Herald doesn't confirm this, we're willing to go out on a limb and suggest that Virgin Media's press operatives were attempting to pooh-pooh BT's ongoing pilot of 40Mbit/s VDSL in Whitchurch, South Glamorgan. ®
