A Western Digital plant in Sarawak, Malaysia, has been sold to Hitachi GST.
The plant makes aluminium platters, the substrate for hard disk drives, (HDD) and WD has moved the plant's responsibilities to another facility in Johor, Malaysia, to consolidate operations and save costs. With the completion of the sale, the Sarawak plant employees now work for Hitachi GST.
Hitachi GST is a subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd, and has ambitions to grow its HDD operations and revenues. The sale to Hitachi GST was announced in May.
In the sale completion announcement, Hitachi GST president Steve Milligan talked of growing the firm's employee base in Malaysia. How much WD was paid is not being revealed. ®
