Animal rights group protests seal clubbing in World of Warcraft
Stages battle against
Animal rights stunt-group PETA' is protesting Canada's culling of adorable baby seals this year by hosting a battle royale in World of Warcraft.
This Saturday, PETA is calling on activist gamers to combat a team of Horde "seal killers" set on bashing soft, furry heads on WoW's Whisperwind server. The demonstration takes place in the high-level zone of The Howling Fjord on the glaciers where baby seals frolic unassumingly.
PETA has cooked up a little story for the event:
Thrall refused to ban the slaughter of seals, despite multiple requests from the Alliance to do so, because Orgrimmar stands to make a large profit from the fur.
Activists from across the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor are banding together to put a stop to the atrocious seal slaughter. Anyone who slaughters baby seals for their fur must surely be in service to the evil Lich King.
The event takes place in a PVE server, meaning players on WoW's Horde faction can't do violence against Alliance players until they flag themselves for combat. But PETA's blog posting indicates the event is a "battleground to stop the slaughter" against a team of four Horde, so there's a very decent chance that's going to happen and end in a clusterfuck of violence.
After all, PETA is catering to an enormous audience of players that will raid a funeral service on WoW for laughs. Not to mention it's a game where players spend untold hours slaughtering the wildlife for fun and profit.
Here's a promotional video PETA has made for the event:
Note the accurate representation of Canadians as the undead — although their US southern accents are a bit baffling, eh?
PETA's sealing protest begins Saturday, April 11 at 1 PM EST. ®
