As adventurous types begin packing their bags for sunny rock climbing holidays and such, Samsung has unveiled a rugged mobile phone that it hopes you’ll see fit to pack into your Berghaus rucksack.

Samsung's Xplorer B2100: one tough phone?

The Xplorer B2100 has, according to Samsung, three core attributes: its “robust durability”, its “stylish design” and the rubberised “comfortable grip”.

Entombed within an anti-shock urethane casing, the B2100 has been designed to withstand bumps, bangs, scrapes, scuffs and dust. It’ll also withstand being plonked into the drink, provided it goes no deeper than 1m and is plucked out within 30 minutes.

But underneath that well ‘ard exterior the Xplorer B2100 is simply a phone – and a fairly basic one at that. There’s no 3G - the talker only supports quad-band GSM and Edge. Noise cancellation has been included, though, for when you're yomping in gale-force winds.

The phone’s 1.7in, 120 x 160 LCD will display pictures snapped on the 1.3Mp camera, but MPEG 4 videos can also be captured at up to 15f/s too. Content’s stored on Micro SD cards. Bluetooth 2.1 is also included.

The body withstands bumps, bangs, scraps and water

You’ll get up to nine hours of talk time from the phone, Samsung claimed. The handset measures 113 x 49 x 17mm and weighs in at 82g.

Samsung’s Xplorer B2100 will be available in Europe next month, but a price hasn’t been stated. ®
