Dell bringing SSDs to the EqualLogic party?

Round Rock stays mum on PS6000

A revamped Dell EqualLogic iSCSI SAN storage array product line could be just around the corner, according to documents seen by El Reg.

The PS6000 will boast better protection, solid state disk speed and more Ethernet capacity.

The PS6000 should increase the gigabit Ethernet port count from three per controller for the current PS5000 to four per controller and have 10GigE support pencilled in for the future. It should also feature SSD support, from either STEC or Intel. Four models have been identified:

- PS6000E - entry-level with SATA drives
- PS6500E - high capacity model wth SATA drives
- PS6000X - faster version with 10,000rpm SAS drives
- PS6000XV - go-even-faster version with 15,000rpm SAS drives
- PS6000S - greased lightning SSD version.

They are all dual controller products with the exception of the PS6000E which is available in single controller form The PS6000E can have up to 16 7,200rpm SATA drives, ranging from 250GB to 1TB capacity, providing array capacity from 2TB to 16TB. Its higher capacity brother, the PS6500E, can have up to 48 SATA drives, either 500GB or 1TB ones.

The PS6000X model comes with up to 16 400GB 10K SAS drives. The XV version uses 16 300 or 450GB 15K SAS drives. Replace those with either 8 or 16 50GB SSDs and you have the PS6000S.

According to the product spec we have seen RAID levels 5,6,10 and 50 are supported and the products have been designed for 99.999 per cent availability with hot-swap components. No prices and availability data yet but an announcement from Dell is expected soon.

Dell has issued no statements about the presumed products and there is nothing about them on its website. The company was not immediately able to comment.®
