Vanessa Redgrave braces for The Day of The Triffids

BBC announces cast for forthcoming remake

The BBC has announced the cast for its remake of John Wyndham classic The Day of The Triffids, including mother and daughter thesp pair Vanessa Redgrave and Joely Richardson.

Scottish-born actor Dougray Scott - of Desperate Housewives and The Crow Road - will tackle main man Dr Bill Masen, supported by Brian Cox, Eddie Izzard and the US of A's Jason Priestley in unspecified roles.

Exec producer Justin Bodle offered the traditional effusive outpouring, enthusing: "We are enormously excited to have secured this stellar cast for The Day Of The Triffids. Together with its amazing effects and iconic locations, it will deliver the drama mini-series event of 2009."

Shooting on the hi-def production - scripted by ER pensman Patrick Harbinson - is due to start in April. It will air "later this year".

The last outing for the horticultural horror story was, the Beeb notes, back in 1981, when John Duttine faced the triffids as Masen. ®
