Intel has told notebook makers it won't be reducing what it charges for mobile processors and chipsets until well into Q2, at the earliest.
Market moles cited [1] by DigiTimes say cuts could come in June, with reductions of 13-40 per cent planned by the chip maker.
That will undoubtedly see the launch of 'Calpella' [2], the next major Centrino roll-out, pushed back, the sources said. And, indeed, that's exactly what we see when we look at Intel's latest roadmap: a late Q3 launch for Calpella and 'Clarksfield', the mobile version of the Core i7.
Calpella looks set to ship in September, a couple of months after its anticipated release date.
Clearly, Intel doesn't believe rushing out new technology will persuade punters to purchase new portables - which is why it looks to have nudged back [3] the next-gen Atom release too.
It's interesting that the chip giant doesn't see lower prices as a way to kick-start sales, either. ®
