Sony's PlayTV: arrives here on 10 September

According to David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, the unit will land in Blighty on 10 September, Eurogamer reports.

Australia and New Zealand will have to wait until January or February for the first PlayTV units.

The device will be rolled out to other European countries between September and December 2008. Reeves said earlier this year that PlayTV will retail for €99 (£78/$157).

PlayTV has two tuners to pick-up DVB-T digital TV broadcasts in Europe. Users can watch one show while recording another, and pause live TV. Recordings are stored on the PS3's own hard drive and can be sent out across the internet to a PSP for viewing on the move.

re: Highest consumption PVR of all time?

Very good, but surely the PS3 needs to be "ON" to write to the HDD?

Does anyone know if the PlayTV automatically switches the PS3 between "ON" and "Standby" when it's actually recording, or can it write to the HDD when in "Standby".

re: Highest consumption PVR of all time?

That Aussie article has been discredited many times already. PS3 only used 170w, when ON, when it's in standby, it's 5w

Newer 40GB units use 130w, even less. Something also this article conviently fails to mention.

Incidently, a Xbox360 uses 180w also when left on, and 8w in standby...

Highest consumption PVR of all time?

Unless there are some very clever energy saving tricks in this, then it'll easily win the 'highest power consumption PVR' acolade without a fight!

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/06/04/choice_gadget_power_costs/ quotes an Aussie study which says that the PS3 already chugs down £120 of juice a year if 'frequently left on idle'. Presumably PlayTV will require the PS3 to be left on 24/7 to access the HDD?
