Targeting social networks for spam began on AOL in the mid 90's before the Internet as we know it now evolved... and has been going on ever since. It was very easy to get someones email address then.
Apparently, someone just learned how to hook their computer to other computers.
More effort is spent on plugging holes into registration systems to prevent automated registrations than the obvious. Follow the f'ing money. Go to the target sales sites, determine where the money goes, prosecute them. Matter of fact, start prosecuting drug companies for selling their wares to the bastards who set up these temporary shops in the first place.
I just got invited to post my phone number to an open group created by one of my friends. He lost his phone and has asked all his friends to post their phnoe numbers. He also happens to have about 200 friends... i told him he should rename his group Goldmine 4 ID Theft or Suckers up 4 Grabs.
