Motorola remodels mobile division

Blame pulled from operational flowchart

Motorola is sprucing up its neglected devices division to make it more attractive to investors.

An internal memo sent out this week outlined the changes to employees - including the appointment of Rob Shaddock as head of consumer products and Bruce Brda as head of worldwide sales and operations.

The reorganisation involves combining the company's "multimedia" division with "feature phones", recognising that the most common feature for a feature phone is the capacity to play back multimedia.

The company has also realigned its structure so management for each model of phone stays with one person, from conception to launch, instead of splitting responsibilities for hardware and software - an arrangement which allowed units to constantly blame each other for product delays and bugs.

It remains to be seen if these moves do anything to reassure the markets that Motorola Devices is viable as a stand-alone company. ®
