Agentless Backup is Not a Myth

Intel's X48 chipset - reviewed by Register Hardware here - is due in Q1 2008, but we'll have to wait until the following quarter for the rest of the 4-series 'Eaglelake' chipset family to arrive.

So indicates an Intel presentation slide posted by Chinese-language site HKEPC. Q2 2008 will see the arrival of the P45 discrete chipset and its integrated sibling, the G45. It will be joined by the lesser integrated part, the G43.

The chipsets had been anticipated to appear in Q2, though a past HKEPC report indicated a later, Q4, release. Given Intel's CPU roadmap, that always seemed an unlikely schedule.

All three are the numerical successors of the P35, G35 and G33 chipsets, but Intel sees the G45 fitting into to a broader range of desktop systems than the G35 did, and the G43 reaching down into more budget segments of the PC market.

The G45 and G43 on-board GPU will be capable of supporting DirectX 10 and Shader Model 4.0, along with OpenGL 2.0, it's said. Both will power Windows Vista Premium and MPEG 2 decoding. But while the G45's GPU can also do AC1 and H.264 decoding, the G43's can't. They'll both support HDMI outputs - HDCP support is built in too - in addition to DVI, the HKEPC report claims.

All three chipsets will be fabbed at 65nm.

They'll also incorporate the upcoming ICH10 southbridge I/O chip, which isn't a part of X48. ICH10 will be used by 'Tylersburg', the QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) chip that will link Intel's 'Nehalem' processors to the ICH10 when they debut in Q4 2008.
