SaaS data loss: The problem you didn’t know you had
Site news Next week, the thousands of readers who contributed to The Register's recent virtualization research panel will have the opportunity to see the result, when we kick off the first in a series of free online debates.
The Register's virtualization eSymposium, From the Data Center to the Desktop, will kick off at 8:30 PST, 16:30GMT on Tuesday 6 November, with virtualization heavyweights introduced by Register US editor Ashlee Vance.
Freeform Dynamics analyst Tony Lock will present the detailed findings of the research, followed by a Q&A session where participants will get a chance to drill deeper into the data.
In addition, we've drafted in industry heavyweights - including experts from VMWare - to cover sessions on desktop virtualization, licensing in a virtualized environment, and managing a virtualized environment, again followed by Q&A sessions.
The event wraps up at 11:15 PST (19:15 GMT) with a round table chaired by Ashlee featuring all of the speakers. It'll be your chance to get into the details of virtualization, while Ashlee cross-examines the speakers. You can submit questions for him to ask beforehand, by mailing him direct.

Neat idea
I use TrueCrypt for sharing secure files between Windows and Linux, but I hadn't run VMs with it. This is a fun idea. I've played with the recent release of PuppyLinux 3.00 with added development (compilation) environment, it's rather full featured although small, perfect for running virtual machines underneath it. Getting TrueCrypt to compile with it might be a trick, but should be possible.
More fun... think we can get TrueCrypt and VMWare on an OLPC 'XO' box?
VMware and TrueCrypt
One major use I have for desktop virtualization, is for creating a high-security environment, for people who have stuff to hide. I put VMware virtual machines inside of TrueCrypt containers, thus getting around the need to use time-consuming products like CyberScrub (which securely erases files and unused disk space). I call this the "box within a box within a box" approach, as the physical computer is the outer box, which contains the safe, which contains the virtual computer. I'm curious as to whether anyone else does this, and I look forward to the conference.
