How is this news?

A company who specialises in flogging its security expertise sponsors a survey that discovers - surprise, surprise - That its target market are at huge risk from some bogey man that can be mitigated by the surveys generous sponsor, for a fee.

If this had been M$ instead of Dimension Data the article would have (rightly) been dripping with sarcasm.

If it had reported that no company has ever gone down because a bunch of spreadsheets and similar had been removed from the hallowed corporate premises, and the only stuff that has caused corporate grief when it got out has been emails detailing dubious and even criminal practises by the corporate themselves, then this might not be news, but would at least be credible.

In future, please charge for advertisements, at least for your readerships sake, if not your own.

Having tried to educate my users about security I have found it to be a waste of time as they don't care and don't listen. Then again what did I expect, most of the time I'm pissing into the wind as the "security manager" always leaves his wifi on and never locks his screen. I feel a bought of PFY like behaviour coming on...

... will security ever be taken seriously, even then only by those directly affected.

Ordinary people find IT security too difficult to setup, clumsy and awkward to use and when it doesn't actually stop your PC (or whatever device) from working properly then it can certainly slow things down to a crawl. When the IT security industry makes it products "idiot proof" AND secure then I'm sure most people will do the right thing and set up the appropriate systems - but until that happens the ordinary user will continue to be scared off by the complexities involved.
