Dell is waving goodbye to 250 tech support workers at its Nashville, Tennessee operations, the company said today.

The layoffs are the fruits of the "Dell 2.0" restructuring strategy, which will eliminate 10 per cent of its worldwide workforce (more than 8,000 jobs) over the next year. Dell announced the workforce decimation blueprint back in May.

Spokesman David Frink said the Tennessee facilities house about 4,000 employees in manufacturing, sales and support positions. The eliminations will hit a specific tech support group, although Frink could not elaborate.

He said a number of affected employees will be eligible to apply for jobs in sales. All else dropped will be given a severance package and outplacement support. The employees were notified of the cuts today.

Last week, Dell closed a sales call center near Waco, Texas, culling an additional 260 jobs. Dell also owns US call centers in Round Rock, Oklahoma City and Twin Falls, Idaho. ®
