As an American living in Paris, I can attest that the European model of requiring the incumbents to fully open their networks to new players works quite well. There is more competition here and much high broadband penetration than in the States. The problem with the States is the mindless Free Markets philosophy, which is based more on ideology and protecting the Status Quo than on a close scrutiny of the facts. In the telecommunications and health care industries, the European models win hands down. Pragmatism should be the decisive factor, not ideology.
