EMC goes all out with storage overhaul

Celerra, Centera, Clariion and Symmetrix lines get juiced

HP ProLiant Gen8: Integrated lifecycle automation

EMC is expected to announce a high-end Symmetrix storage system Monday, in addition to a slew of upgrades for its existing storage gear.

Network World reports that, during a web cast, the company will reveal the latest on the storage front.

Highlighting the announcement will be a new entry in the company's Symmetrix DMX line. The DMX-4 will be an end-to-end 4Gbps array mixing both Fibre Channel and Serial ATA drives. The DMX-4 will also offer increased capacity by utilizing 750Gb drives with enhanced replication performance.

On the upgrade front, EMC's Celerra NAS array will add block-level SAN support without requiring a separate NAS gateway. Celerra will also receive thin provisioning capabilities and a new single controller node. The NS20 node will be able to be upgraded to match the existing duel controller NS40, which holds up to 32TB of capacity.

The Clariion line will receive an overhaul, supporting thin provisioning — where physical disk capacity is used only as needed for virtual volumes. It replaces the traditional method where large portions of storage capacity are allocated to applications but often remain unused. Clariions will also now support RAID 6 protection as well.

The EMC Centera will now include support for 750Gb drives. The Centera will also receive an upgrade to its MD5 hashing algorithm for increased security.

We'll have the juicy details on EMC's product roll-out Monday morning. ®
