CA spin out Ingres has announced its first corporate acquisition in a deal that capitalizes on the core Ingres heritage established by its former parent company.
The open source database provider said it has purchased former CA service provider and reseller partner Thinking Instruments, to "immediately broaden its corporate" reach in Germany and the Middle East.
Thinking is known for its work around database selection, configuration and performance tuning, enterprise resource planning consulting and work in clustered computing. As a member of the CA family, Think resold Ingres for 13 years.
Thinking claims customers using Ingres in the public sector, the steel market and the energy sector. It also helps out with building and providing services for Ingres-based applications.
The deal comes after Ingres announced that CA's senior vice president for innovation Sam Greenblatt is joining the Ingres board of directors. CA retained a controlling stake in Ingres following last year's spin out, giving it the right to appoint a member to the board. Greenblatt oversees CA's open standards and systems research and has served as a chief architect of the Open Source Development Lab (OSDL).
Ingres' chief executive Terry Garnett welcomed Greenblatt's appointment saying in a statement that his experience and insights on the issues driving development and growth in the enterprise software sector would make him an a "valuable addition" to the Ingres board. ®
