Intel axes Glasgow labs

Intel is to bring the shutters down on its Glasgow operation in what may be the first of a series of cuts. The 17-strong design team were called in by managers this afternoon to be told the company had failed to find a role for them in a year-long review.

Intel said the staff will have the chance to enter its internal redeployment pool if they wish. The Register's source said he felt no real effort had been made to reassign them.

The Glasgow office was acquired by Intel in the Level One buyout seven years ago (http://www.theregister.co.uk/1999/03/05/intel_buys_level_one/). Its initial focus on innovation in networking chips has latterly been replaced by a "sustaining" role.

An Intel spokesperson confirmed that the plan for Glasgow had been in gestation for some time, but also that it is "in line" with CEO Paul Otellini's recent promises (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/04/28/intel_preps_restructure/) to leave no stoned unturned in a bid to refocus the business.®
