Check Point has promised to support the open source Snort community following a $225m cash and stock acquisition of security tools firm Sourcefire last week. The deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, is expected to close in Q106.

Sourcefire founder Martin Roesch developed the popular Snort intrusion prevention before helping to build Sourcefire as a commercial developer of intrusion prevention and real-time network awareness products.

In a statement, Checkpoint said Sourcefire’s Intrusion Sensor, Real-time Network Awareness, Defense Center products and Snort would be combined with Check Point’s InterSpect internal security gateway and Integrity endpoint security suite to bolster its portfolio of internal security products post acquisition.

"Check Point is committed to all existing Sourcefire and Check Point product lines and the Snort open source community and we look forward to further growing all of these solutions in the future.
