Ebbers could face life for WorldCom fraud
WorldCom now 'synonymous with fraud'
Bernie Ebbers - who was found guilty of masterminding the $11bn accounting scandal at US telco giant WorldCom - should spend the rest of his days behind bars, the prosecution has said.
That's according to prosecution papers filed with the federal judge in charge of the case which claim that the actions of the former chief exec have made WorldCom "synonymous with fraud".
Said the prosecutors: "The enormity of the crimes that Mr Ebbers committed cannot be overstated: The fraud at...WorldCom was the largest securities fraud in history.
"Along with Enron, the name WorldCom has become synonymous with fraud."
The defence has asked the judge to go easy on Ebbers, 63, because he has a heart condition.
Ebbers is due to be sentenced on 13 July, reports Reuters. ®
