Database growth boosts Oracle

Oracle posted solid revenue growth during its fourth quarter on the back on improved database sales.
Larry's shop reported a 26 per cent jump in revenue to $3.88bn, while net income rose 3 per cent to $1.02bn. The results came as Oracle manages a number of rocky acquisitions. These deals, however, didn't seem to affect the company's core database business.
"Oracle's database business delivered another strong growth quarter," said Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. "The latest Gartner, IDC and Morgan Stanley database surveys all agree that Oracle is increasing database market share while IBM's DB2 database is in decline."
New license revenue for database and middleware products rose 16 per cent to $1.26bn. That type of growth is a strong sign for Oracle, which like many software makers rates new license revenue as a key metric. Overall, Oracle software revenue cam in at $3.12bn - up 24 per cent year-over-year.
For the full year, Oracle reported a 16 per cent rise in revenue to $11.8bn and a 8 per cent net income rise to $2.9bn. ®
