Intel ships 'multi-threading friendly' compilers
Gears up for multi-core software development
Intel has released updated compilers designed to help developers create software tuned to multi-core processors, the company said yesterday.
Intel Compilers 9.0 for C++ and Fortran are geared toward multi-thread programming, with appropriate upgrades to the debugging tools needed to polish such complex coding, even after the compiler has optimised the binary.
The new compilers include an "auto-parallelisation" feature that sniffs out opportunities to spin multiple execution threads, the software giant said. The development tools support OpenMP 2.5, the multi-threading API for Windows and Unix.
"As demand increases for multi-core platforms, here is an opportunity for software vendors to add performance, features and innovations to their products," said Bill Savage, general manager of Intel's Software Products Division. "The Intel Compilers 9.0 enable C++ and Fortran developers to accelerate the development of their applications for multi-core and threaded environments."
Intel also said the new compilers offer application-level security options for Linux in order to provide the same reduction of buffer overflow vulnerabilities open to Windows users.
Version 9.0 of the Intel C++ Compiler is available now, with prices starting at $399 for either the Windows or the Linux versions. Version 9.0 of the Intel Fortran Compiler is also available now, from $499. The compilers are available from Intel's web site as a download, or as a CD from Intel and its reseller partners. ®
