BT has snapped up SkyNet Systems Limited (SkyNet), a leading Cisco-only dealer, to bolster its data networking services.

The UK's monster telco refused to say how much it paid for the company but it's understood to be somewhere between £10m and £20m. No jobs will be lost as part of the acquisition.

Based near Oxford, SkyNet provides "LAN solutions" particularly to the education, health, local government and media sectors.

The reseller employs 59 people and for the year to the end of March generated turnover of £21.7m and an operating profit of £1.5m.

In a statement, BT's Tom Craig said the deal is part of its strategy "to extend our capability and market coverage in key technologies such as IP telephony, wireless networking and security".

The company is to be renamed BTSkyNet. ®
