We can all sleep a little sounder in our beds today safe in the knowledge that roving rock pundit Bono and Bill Gates spent at least one night over the weekend putting the world to rights at Bill's Seattle pad.

The U2 frontman crashed at Bill's following a gig in the city attended by the world's richest bloke. Gates admitted to Reuters: "I was one of 20,000 screaming fans," but when pressed as to whether he might buy a U2 special edition iPod, he declared: "Absolutely not."

Bill apparently met Bono through their shared interest in things philanthropic. Naturally, Bill supplies the cash in this campaigning partnership through his Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Bono supplies the the kind of political clout that only an international rock star can though his tireless globetrotting programme in which world leaders get their ears well and truly chewed off.

Gates explained: "We're big believers that more needs to be done in developing countries. Let me tell you, Bono has had a huge impact." This is true, and all Bill needs now is for Sting to pop round in his Amazonian tribesman costume and it'll pretty well be an end to world hunger and poverty. ®
