Computacenter has picked up the gig to manage the command, control and communication services for the UK's Highways Agency.

The five-year-deal is worth £8m and sees the reseller giant working in tandem with Vivista, the Chippenham, Wilts computer services firm which was bought by Sungard earlier this year.

They won the contract following a competitive tender organised through the Government Telecommunications Catalogue (GTC). The pair will look after the IT infrastructure at the Highway Agency’s seven new regional control centres, which are expected to reduce congestion on England's motorways by five per cent in the next five years. This seems very optimistic to us.

Now for the hardware: the agency’s CCC infrastructure is based on a clustered Sun Microsystems and HP server back end, and HP desktops, all configured by Computacenter. Vivista is supplying the command and communications software glue. Lastly, the 1,000 traffic officers will go to work with Sepura Airwave radio terminals.
