Intel to debut low-end Grantsdales soon

VIA, SiS, ULi, ATI Socket-T chipsets scheduled too

Intel is expected to introduce two more i91x chipset series members in Q3, including a low-end model designed to support both Socket-478 and Socket-T processors.

The i915GV will follow June 2004's launch of the i915G and i915P chipsets. The new part is a i915G minus the ability to operate with an external PCI Express x16 graphics card, according to Japanese site PC Watch. It will features Intel's Media Graphics Accelerator 900 integrated 3D engine.

The GV will support all Socket-T LGA-775 CPUs across either a 533MHz or 800MHz frontside bus. It can take DDR SDRAM clocked at 33MHz or 400MHz, or DDR 2 memory clocked at 400MHz or 533MHz, all in dual-channel configuration.

It will be accompanied by the i910GL which will provide only dual-channel DDR 333/400 support. It too will lack PCI Express x16, but will be able operate with 478-pin processors.

At the same time as it launches the i910GL and i915GV, Intel is expected to ship the i925XE, which brings 1066MHz FSB support to the P4 Extreme Edition.

Rival chipset makers VIA and SiS are preparing their own Socket-T chipsets. VIA's PT980 is expected mid-Q3, with the integrated PM890 due in Q4. Both support Socket-478 CPUs as well as Socket-T parts, and provide DDR 2 support up to 667MHz.

The SiS 656 and single-channel memory SiS 649 should ship mid-Q3 and late Q3. An integrated version of the 656, the SiS 662 is expected to ship mid-Q4. All three support both 775- and 478-pin processors. The 656 can handle DDR 2 at up to 667MHz. A successor chipset, the 656FX, will offer 800MHz DDR 2 support in Q1 2005.

The quarter before that is expected to see ATI's single- and dual-channel DDR/DDR 2 Socket-T integrated chipsets, codenamed RS400 and RG400.

ULi's M1685 will provide single-channel DDR 2 and DDR support in Q4 before being succeeded by a dual-channel version, the M1691, in Q2 2005 - around the time Intel is expected to announce Lakeport and Glenwood, the successors to the i915 and i925 series. ®
