The University of Bradford has introduced a postgraduate course in Forensic Computing, in response to "growing demand for computer scientists" with specialist skills to investigate high tech crimes.

The MSc is one of a handful of similar courses available to post graduate students in the UK. Other universities offering MScs in computer forensics include Cranfield University and the University of Glamorgan.

"Students will be given the skills, knowledge and training to seek out evidence for a wide range of IT crime or misuse - including theft of trade secrets, theft or destruction of intellectual property, and fraud," said course tutor Dr Anastasia Konstadopoulou.

"This is an emerging but rapidly expanding area of work so, not only will the course serve the increasing number of students with interest in the subject areas, it will also serve the growing demand for specialists in this area."

Subject modules range from the technical - e.g. "Networks and Protocols", "Foundations of cryptography" and "Architecture and operating systems" - to those that will prepare students for the legal structure in which their knowledge will be applied. These include "Crime analysis" and "Crime scene management, courtroom and expert witness skills".

Bradford University said that the course was designed to allow students to expand their knowledge of how computers operate and communicate. It will also cover issues related to networking and Web technologies, so that students will develop the skills needed to use computers as an investigative tool.
