AMD brings performance ratings to Geode line

AMD has extended it performance rating-based chip numbering scheme to its Geode line of embedded processors. New Geodes will carry the new tags, and so will old ones as the chip maker renames existing parts.

Dubbed the "Performance Power Rating (PPR)", the scheme is based on both the results of Synchromesh's embedded CPU benchmark suite and AMD's quoted power consumption figure.

So, the two new Geode NX processors AMD rolled out today are the 1500@6W and 1750@14W. The two chips are clocked at 1GHz and 1.4GHz, respectively.

AMD also renamed the current Geode GX2 as the Geode GX 533@1.1W - it's clocked at 400MHz. AMD will also offer the GX 500@1W and the GX 466@0.9W.

In each case, AMD has run the Geode against comparably clocked x86-compatible VIA processors, so you can see who it's pitching at.

Sold in batches of 10,000 chips, the processors are priced as follows. $26.50 for the GX 466@0.9W, $29.10 for the GX 500@1.0W, $32.75 for the GX 533@1.1W, $65.00 for the NX 1500@6W and $55 for the NX 1750@14W.

AMD also said it was offering development boards for each product family. ®
