Sony has updated the software on board its PSX PlayStation 2-based personal video recorder - the second network-borne upgrade the consumer electronics giant has released since the machine shipped last December.
The latest update takes the PSX's system software to version 1.2, and adds a number of feature tweaks. As expected (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/archive/35109.html), it also adds DVD+RW support to the appliance.
So far, the PSX has supported DVD-R and DVD-RW for recording footage to disc, even though the unit's optical drive is capable of handling DVD+R and DVD+RW media. Indeed, such support was originally part of the machine's spec. until Sony dropped it in early December to allow the PSX to ship on schedule (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/archive/34317.html).
The update also adds support for GIF images transferred to the PSX from a digicam, and allows JPEG, TIFF, GIF and MPEG1 stills and videos to be imported from a CD-R disc. Thos files can now be displayed directly from the CD-R. Sony has also increased the number of MP3 tracks stored on a CD-R that the PSX can recognise.
Finally, the update fixes a number of glitches in the previous version of the PSX software, 1.1, making it possible to change recording programs, fast-forward DVD playback at higher speeds and view better slideshows. ®
