Sony UK this week extended its Vaio desktop family with a pair of new product lines: the PCV-RZ500 series and the PCV-RS400 series. The new machines feature 90nm Pentium 4 processors.

Sony is offering two RZ500 models: the home-oriented RZ504 and the pro RZ502P. The home model has the higher spec., but that's more due to its promoted role as a media server.

So, the 504 has a 3.4GHz Pentium 4 with HyperThreading to the 502P's 3.2GHz model. The two machines ship with 1GB and 512MB, respectively, off dual-channel 400MHz DDR SDRAM; and 250GB and 120GB, respectively, of 7200rpm hard disk capacity. The 504 ships with a 128MB ATI Radeon 9600XT graphics card; the 502P a 128MB ATI Radeon 9200.

Both machines feature DVD writers with +R/RW and -R/RW support. They also offer four-in-one card readers (Memory Stick, Compact Flash and Smart Media), internal 56Kbps modems, seven USB 2.0 ports each, dual 1394 ports, a single S/P DIF output each, and 10/100Mbps Ethernet.

The 504 also ships with Sony's Network Media Receiver and a PC Card 802.11 WLAN card - there's a PC Card slot built into the system unit. Its graphics card has a TV-in facility. Sony also bundles a heap of image and video editing software, plus media management and burning tools.

There are three RS500 series models: the 402, 404 and 406, with 2.8, 3.0 and 3.2GHz Pentium 4 processors with HyperThreading, respectively. The 402 has a 120GB hard drive; the other two have 160GB units. All three ship with 512MB of 400MHz DDR SDRAM; DVD+R, +RW, -R and -RW writers; and 128MB ATI Radeon 9200 graphics cards.

The RS406 and RS404 ship with a TV tuner card and Sony's Giga Pocket video recording and management software.

All three 400s have four-in-one card readers, 56Kbps modems, 10/100Mbps Ethernet adaptors, seven USB 2.0 and two 1394 ports each, S/P DIF digital audio outputs and external speakers.

The RS402, 404 and 406 are available now for £679, £849 and £939, respectively. The RZ504 retails for £1619 and the RZ502P for £1019. All prices exclude sales tax. ®
