AMD today began offering the four- to eight-way system-oriented Opteron 800 Series and the Opteron 100 Series for single-CPU servers and workstations.

Both families were announced last April when AMD also launched and began shipping the Opteron 200 line for dual-processor systems. Why the delay? Perhaps to allow AMD to launch the chips just ahead of Intel's new Itanium 2, which will be announced today.

The 800 series comprises the 840, 842 and 844, matching the performance characteristics of the 200 series. The initial '8' refers to the maximum number of CPUs the system can contain. The 100 series is also available in 140, 142 and 144 flavours. All six new processors are available immediately, AMD said.

Systems based on the 800 series are also available now, the company added, though that’s not the case with the 100 line: you’re looking at Q3 release date for complete systems, with the first mobos coming through next month. The first publicly announced motherboard is an Nvidia nForce-based board from Asus.

With both new lines, AMD has yet to announce the support of a tier one server and/or workstation vendor.

The Opteron 844 is priced at $2149, the 842 at $1299 and the 840 at $740, the same price as the 244. The 144 comes in at $669, the 142 at $438 and the 140 at $229, giving some indication perhaps of where AMD will price the upcoming Athlon 64. Prices are for 1000-unit batches. ®
