Orange flogs cheapo voice/data leased line combo

Powered by Cisco

Orange UK and Cisco have developed a service which enable companies to access both voice and data services through a single leased line.

Customers can save up to 30 per cent by using this fixed line package, compared to buying voice and data networks separately, Orange says.

Orange Link Voice and Data is an intelligent network that can measure different volumes of data flowing through the network and automatically allocate the minimal amount of bandwidth required. Optimised quality of service (QoS) features ensure that each traffic class is handled according to its profile and needs.

The service launches today and follows a three month trial.

Jason Ellis, product manager at Orange, said the service differs from WAM services supplied by fixed line telcos because it includes mobile traffic (such as GPRS) and improved bandwidth management.

Orange engineers will handle the monitoring and installation of the service, which is typically delivered over a 2Mbps fibre-optic leased line. The infrastructure is monitored 24 hours a day by Orange with service level agreements, such as a guaranteed five-hour call out.

Orange Link Voice and Data is based on standard Cisco equipment, which enables transportation of voice and legacy signalling DPNSS (Digital Private Network Signalling System) and mobile data, between corporate PBXs, a customer's data network and the Orange network.

Subsidised pricing for Orange Link for Voice and Data is £3,000 for installation and £7,500 for voice services and a requirement for a minimum of one further connected service at £1,500 per annum.

Orange is positioning the service as a stepping stone in moving from circuit switched to IP telephony, although use of IP phones is not a requirement.

Early adopters for the service include Canon and RAC.

Orange hopes the service will help it reach a target of achieving 25 per cent of its revenue from data services. ®
