ISP claims to offer ‘free’ broadband

Deja vu anyone?

Sceptics and ever-hopeful optimists alike shouldn't have to wait too long for the inside story on freebb.co.uk, a new outfit which claims to be offering free broadband.

Those behind the scheme have told El Reg that they'll speak to us tomorrow (Friday) when "further details will be given".

"We are of course keen to allay any scepticism and equally we would not want to fuel any negative reporting on what we are sure is going to be an incredible opportunity for the public to benefit from our legitimate offer," we were told.

Details of the "worlds first FREE broadband Internet provider" are sketchy - cable connections, Web browsers, selective Web sites...

Confused? That makes two of us. Still, the Ts&Cs on the FreeBB Web site give us a bit more of an insight. It reveals that FreeBB is the trading name of World of Profit Limited.

It also points out that all people who register with the service will receive a weekly newsletter by email which will contain updates on FreeBB's progress before it launch.

Here's the interesting bit: "It may also contain articles or sponsors messages that we believe to be of interest to our members."

Of course, you can unsubscribe from this newsletter at any time but this will scupper your chance to get free broadband.

The Ts&Cs go on to say: "FreeBB will, in its sole discretion, determine the criteria for the provision of free broadband access and at this time are under no obligation to provide this service to any individual. All individuals that meet the criteria will receive a broadband Internet connection at home, completely free of any connection or monthly charges, for a minimum period of one year."

It's at times like this that expressions such as "if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is" get dusted off and used in large measure. Get the picture? ®
