Sayonara to the cathode ray tube

Forget cathode ray tube, large screen TVs with LCD displays will become a fixture in homes within the next three years.

That's the vision of Zenpei Tani, who's in charge of Sharp LCD business, which he expounded in a recent interview with Nikkei Microdevices magazine in Japan.

Next year, Sharp plans to increase the attraction and profile of LCD television by bringing down the cost and improving the performance of panels.

To make LCD displays more affordable, Sharp is to modernise the production methods employed in its
Kameyama plant, in Japan's Mie prefecture.

The company is also looking to improve the performance of LCD displays using a high-quality picture technology called Advanced Super-V (ASV), which it recently embraced

Research firm Displaysearch last week predicted that revenues from LCD screens would outstrip CRT revenues this year, and that LCD unit volumes would move past CRT volumes in 2004.

Sharp's LCD TV strategies and its LCD panel technologies for sets will be showcased at the seminar, LCD/PDP International 2002 running in Yokohama, Japan from today until Friday November 1. ®
