Intel to cut up to 55% off Pentium 4 prices Sunday

Celerons trimmed too

Intel will cut its Pentium 4 prices by up to 55 per cent on Sunday, just ahead of the launch of 1.9GHz and 2GHz versions of the same processor.

The chip giant has already confirmed the arrival of the 2GHz P4, which will be officially rolled out at Intel's Developer Forum on Monday. Interestingly, the company will also be showing off the first Mobile Pentium 4, we hear. That's based on the upcoming Northwood 0.13 micron P4 die-shrink and isn't scheduled to ship until February 2002.

We also expect 1.0 and 1.1GHz Celerons to ship any day now too.

The 1.9 and 2.0GHz P4 will debut at $375 and $562, respectively. On Sunday, the prices of the 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 and 1.8GHz P4s will all be reduced something like this:

Pentium 4 New price Old price Reduction
2.0GHz $562
1.9GHz $375
1.8GHz $256 $562 55%
1.7GHz $193 $352 45%
1.6GHz $163 $294 45%
1.5GHz $133 $256 48%
1.4GHz $133 $193 31%
1.3GHz $133 $193 31%

That's not all, of course:

Celeron New price
1.1GHz $103
1.0GHz $89
950MHz $74
900MHz $64
850MHz $74
800MHz $64
766MHz $64
733MHz $64

Further cuts to the Pentium 4 line are scheduled for 28 October, as are what will almost certainly be the last reductions to the prices of the Pentium III family before they're rebranded as top-end Celerons. ®
