Freeserve takes swipe at AOL's tax free status

It's getting bitchy

The row over AOL UK's exemption from paying tax has spilled into adverts littering today's newspapers.

Yesterday, Freeserve CEO, John Pluthero, said he didn't have a "beef" with AOL UK over the legal loophole that meant it doesn't have to pay VAT on its service.

He even told El Reg that if he was in AOL UK's shoes he'd do the same thing.

Today, though, Freeserve uses the tax row to promote its service.

The ad reads:

AOL doesn't charge VAT.

Freeserve does.

So how come Freeserve is still better value?

It goes on:

Freeserve charges just £12.99 per month for Freeserve Anytime. It allows you to explore the Internet anytime, day or night. Being UK based, that price includes VAT.

With AOL your connection goes all the way to servers in the States. So, it has managed to avoid VAT charges until now. Yet its equivalent charge is £14.99 a month.

If AOL were to charge VAT, its monthly price could soar to £17.61.

Add up the difference yourself and head for the best value Internet Service Provider at www.freeserve.com.
