Samsung SyncMaster 151MP

Flat-panel monitor

Review Flat-panel display prices may be falling, but if you want something above the norm that offers a few extras you still have to pay the price for it. Samsung’s 151MP is not only gorgeous to look at, it also comes with a built-in TV tuner, which means it can double up as a television. However, all this does add up to almost £900 for a 15in flat-panel.

The maximum resolution of 1,024x768 and the 0.297 pixel pitch are pretty average for a flat-panel in this price range. But the picture quality certainly isn’t, thanks to the vibrant colour palette. Character definition isn’t the best we’ve seen, but it’s perfectly adequate. However, areas of the screen did contain small, but noticeable, patches of discolouration.

This slim and extremely lightweight unit has most of the necessary connections, including RGB, S-Video and a TV antenna cable. However, it lacks a DVI (digital video interface) – an increasingly common feature among the new wave of flat-panels.

The SyncMaster 151MP features all the added extras you’d associate with a TV, including a remote control unit and built-in speakers. There’s also a mounting pad at the back of the flat-panel, which allows it to be attached to a wall.

This is a vivid, colourful display with an attractive sleek design. Despite this, the 151MP is expensive at £899. But if you want a versatile display that offers support for home entertainment as well as for a PC, this is a good choice.
