Techno-myth debunker Rob Rosenberger (http://www.vmyths.com) has received a death threat as a reward for his efforts to expose GRC.com founder Steve Gibson's recent rants (http://grc.com/dos/intro.htm) on the Win-XP raw-socket terror for the rubbish that they are.
Rosenberger's GRC.com spoof page (http://kumite.com/rsnbrgr/rob/grcspoof) compares, tongue-in-cheek, the devastating spamming potential of the e-mail attachment with the devastating packeting power of the raw socket, with which GRC's eponymous founder has lately become obsessed.
Rosenberger has also done a somewhat less vicious article ridiculing (http://www.vmyths.com/rant.cfm) Gibson's dire predictions for raw socket implementation, not unlike our own two items here (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/19925.html) and here (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/19623.html).
"I found a death threat in today's e-mail, Rosenberger told The Register. "The guy ironically wrote it from his own account, can you believe it? And to think people worry about untraceable packets..."
"[To] the reigning media darling in computer elitism, Rob Rosenberger, get a life....die!" the offending memo reads.
"Some people may read it differently," Rosenberger observes. "I'm the one who received the e-mail, and I don't take 'die!' lightly. The [police] officer who took my complaint scratched his head but took it as seriously as I do. If I get blown away in a drive-by shooting, well, at least I told the cops beforehand."
"I've heard from a number of Steve Gibson's fans -- and I'd drink a beer with any one of them. In fact, I intend to clink glasses with Gibson and his groupies at Gnomedex (http://www.gnomedex.com). As for this guy? Bah, there's always one in a crowd."
"I don't take threats lightly, but I can still joke about them. I live one town away from a large Amish community, you know. Imagine if the guy shot at me from a horse-drawn buggy. "Clop clop clop clop BLAM! clop clop clop clop...."
"I received a death threat last year while compiling a report on the people behind the infamous Blitzkrieg server computer virus (http://www.kumite.com/myths/download/blitzkrg.rtf)."
And here we thought we had a problem with the Harry Homeowner groupies and MCSE retards Gibson has thus far bamboozled.... ®
