Goal-ace Beckham becomes gaming hero

Virtual Becks comes complete with mohican

England goal-hero David Beckham is poised to be re-invented as the hero of a computer game.

Rage, producer of David Beckham Soccer, has created a representation of Beckham which features his latest Travis Bickle-style mohican, as well as a version with his more familiar cropped look.

The game is due to be released this Christmas and will be available on the Game Boy, Game Boy Advance and Play Station One consoles.

Beckham, 26, who captained England in a 2-0 win against Greece in a World Cup qualifier last night, and scored a memorable free-kick goal to seal the win, has signed a three-year deal for an undisclosed sum with Rage. Manchester United would dearly love to get such a signature, but we digress.

In a statement, Beckham said: "In my free time I love playing computer games, like most footballers. Who knows, I might even pick up a few helpful tips to improve my game!"

David Beckham Soccer is said to feature technology which allows players, selected by gamers, to move around the pitch fluidly. It also includes lighting effects designed to make a stadium come to life. Crowd music and noise are included as part of the 3-D game.

As well as being one of the players in the game, the Beckham figure takes a coaching role in the shoot-them-in including assisting players with free kicks and corners. But will effete retaliation against fouls, which Beckham notoriously demonstrated in the last World Cup against Argentina, getting himself sent off, also feature in the game?

Descriptions of the game are also sadly lacking in descriptions of change kits, such as the sandals and sarong look sometimes favoured by Becks himself... ®
