Free whitepaper – Ensuring high service levels in cloud computing

Microsoft has posted a warning for Win2K users regarding Roxio's Easy CD Creator which is causing PCs to crash and the dreaded blue screen of death to appear.

"Immediately after you install Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 Platinum, you may receive an error message on a blue screen and the computer may stop responding (hang), or the computer may take a long time to start," it says.

Along with Roxio's official line, Microsoft says the problem is down to the Take Two module conflicting with Windows 2000. However, we revealed a few days ago that many users were seeing their PCs destroyed even if they had removed Take Two from the installation.

MS suggests that users uninstall the software and then reinstall the software without Take Two. Again, however, many people have reported that uninstalling the software caused their PCs to fall over and disk drives to disappear.

It continues: "If you have a Zip drive, disconnect the cable to the Zip drive. Or, make sure that a disk is inserted in the Zip drive when you turn on the computer." It also recognises the fact - despite the official Roxio announcement - that it's not just Zip drives that are causing the problems. "Try disconnecting the IDE cable to your CD-R or CD-RW drive" and "Try disconnecting all USB devices that are attached to the computer".

We have had numerous suggested methods sent it by readers over how to get Easy CD Creator installed without wrecking your computer but we're only going to print if we test them ourselves. And we can't spare the computers.

Roxio has been uncharacteristically quiet recently. But any comments or additional announcements would be welcomed. We'll keep you informed. ®
