Hewlett-Packard says it will soon inch past Dell to become Europe's number two PC vendor.
"This is the first time we've been so close to the number two position in Europe," said HP EMEA business desktop manager Stephan Wippermann.
According to figures from Gartner Dataquest, HP's market share in EMEA grew to eight per cent in Q1 2001, from 6.3 per cent for the same quarter the previous year.
This made it the region's third biggest PC vendor, beaten only by Compaq (with 13.5 per cent of the market, up from 12.9 per cent) and Dell (with 9 per cent, up from 7.9 per cent).
The US manufacturer made the statement after announcing major price cuts on its Pentium 4-based systems.
HP chopped prices on its P4-based corporate desktop PCs, taking effect immediately in Europe. The company said this would result in price reductions of between 13 per cent and 30 percent.
HP said it was reacting to Intel's decision to cut prices on its 1.3GHz, 1.4GHz and 1.5GHz P4 chips. ®
