1.4GHz AMD Athlon debuts on Web

Cropping up on price lists all over the place

AMD's 1.4GHz Athlon has started appearing in chip suppliers' price lists, suggesting the part's launch can't be that far off and may even turn up next month.

Eagle-eyed Register readers tell us the 1.4GHz Athlon appeared on a UK chip sales site last week, and we now hear that it has been spotted on German supplier K&M Electronics' site too.

And here's another: the part - number A1400AMS3B - is now being offered by Dabs Direct for £218 ($314). The K&M price is DM660 ($304), which is close enough, we'd say.

The part may be the last Athlon to be based on the current Thunderbird core. Faster versions of the chip are expected in July and will ship at over 1.5GHz. That said, rumours that emerged early April suggested that AMD would release a 1.5GHz T'bird before launching Palomino at 1.53GHz. ®
