AMD Palomino, Morgan slide to July

ClawHammer ship date dropped altogether

AMD Roadmap AMD's Palomino processor - the next-generation Athlon - will not ship until July, according to a revised desktop roadmap leaked to Germany's c't magazine.

Palomino, the successor to the current Athlon core, Thunderbird, was originally due to ship this quarter at over 1.2GHz, according to a roadmap we saw at the tail end of 2000.

We're now looking at Palomino coming in at 1.4GHz, presumably because AMD has managed to get Thunderbird up to 1.3GHz and wants to give it some room to sell before bringing in the faster part. Palomino will begin sampling next quarter.

According to the new roadmap, Thoroughbred, the 0.13 micron Athlon, is still set to sample in the final quarter of this year in preparation to ship Q1 2002.

However, ClawHammer, the 64-bit CPU aimed at one and two-way workstations and servers appears to have been knocked back to Q2 2002, or at least halfway through the first half of next year, which is how the roadmap graphic shows it. That's the earliest the chip will ship, we suspect. The previous roadmap had it down to sample Q4 2001 and ship Q1 2002 - the new roadmap provides no sampling or production date for ClawHammer.

Morgan, the next generation Duron core, appears to have been delayed too. Previously scheduled to sample Q1 2001, it will now sample next quarter and ship in July. Like Palomino, it will come in at a higher speed than previously stated, hitting 950MHz rather than 800MHz.

Appaloosa, Morgan's successor, should hit the market sooner than planned, however. Once set for a Q1 2002 debut, it will now be introduced in the fourth quarter of this year and ship March 2002, also a quarter earlier than expected. ®
