Cocaine abuse in Germany is soaring, and it's all because of the dotcom revolution, or so The Times claims.

Fast-paced demands of the dotcom world are leaving German executives, more used to weighing decisions carefully, floundering. Cocaine is used as a pharmaceutical prop by those who cannot quite cope with the new responsibilities at work.

Wolfgang Goetz, the director of a Cologne therapy centre, told The Times: "Cocaine produces the effects society is demanding." Presumably this means that society is demanding unbearable arrogance and extreme tedium from its executives then?

Officially there are 5000 new cocaine addicts registered each yar - but you don't need to be a genius to work out that many times more people will be using the drug. Or to realise that they can't all be executives working for dotcoms.

Levels of drug abuse in Germany may be soaring, but there's a way to go before it reaches the heights of the UK, which is supposed to have the biggest percentage of illegal drug users -recreational or desparate - of any country in Western Europe. ®
