Hyundai breaks free from US DRAM tariffs

But what does it all mean?

The US Department of Commerce has lifted the 10.44 per cent anti-dumping tariff it had imposed on Hyundai, the DRAM maker.

But what effect will it have on prices? One possibility is that the US spot price will fall even further as Hyundai exports more into the country. But
This in turn could stabilise the price in Europe, as there would be less memory on the market this side of the pond, thus halting the price slide seen all year.

However, one analyst told El Reg that it depended on the nature of the tariff imposed upon Hyundai. If, he said, the company had been able to export to the US but only above a certain price, then there should be very little effect at all following the decision.

At the time of writing no one at Hyundai could be reached for comment.

The decision to lift the tariff coincided with the promise by the Seoul government that it would end its WTO panel procedures against the tariff, and the US chip manufacturer Micron's decision to withdraw the anti dumping charge against Hyundai. ®
