Brits lukewarm about Net use

Cold custard more appealing

More than half of British adults has never accessed the Net, according to the latest number crunching from the National Statistics Office.

Asked why they had never done so, half said they just weren't interested.

A quarter said they didn't have a computer and 15 per cent said they lacked the confidence and didn't have the necessary skills to do it.

Six per cent said the cost of accessing the Net was too high.

Of the 45 per cent of the population (some 20.4 million people) that does access the Net, more than two thirds do so to find out more information about goods and services. A similar number access the Net for email.

The survey was carried out in July 2000. Another one is due in December. Can't wait for more earth shattering revelations. ®
